Filling Pump
- Close pump pinch clamp
- Fill syringe with physician-prescribed medication
- Attach syringe to pump and invert, pressing down on plunger to fill pump to desired volume (fig 1)
- Attach tethered cap to pump
- Mark medication labels to indicate medication used and wrap around the tubing below the clamp
- Open pinch clamp to prime pump tubing
Placing Catheter (Prior to suturing)
- Using introducer needle provided, puncture skin 3 to 5 inches from incision
- Remove the needle leaving introducer in place (fig 2)
- Thread the marked end of the catheter through the introducer into the surgical site
(fig 3) - Remove sheath by pulling over catheter, ensuring that the catheter remains in place
(fig 4) - Cover catheter entrance site with the dressing provided to secure to skin
(fig 5)
Priming the Catheter
- Draw up 1 to 3cc of medication with the smaller syringe (provided)
- Attach connector to the 3cc syringe
- Ensure connector is open to a 90 degree angle for catheter insertion
- Insert non-marked end of the catheter into the compression sleeve of the connector that is attached to the 3cc syringe until it cannot be advanced any further
- Ensure that the catheter is pushed in as far as possible, past the ‘pinch point’, or catheter may not infuse properly
- Depress the top hinged piece of the connector until an audible ‘click’ is heard
- Inject medication to prime catheter and ensure medication is flowing freely. Medication should bead at the end of the catheter within incision site
- Remove 3cc syringe from connector and discard
- Remove end cap from pump tubing and attach connector. (If the system has multiple catheters, repeat steps for priming)
- Verify all clamps have been left OPEN so the medication will continue to flow
Final Steps
- Coil and tape any excess tubing to the patient
- Secure pump to the patient by clipping it to the gown/ace bandage/dressing, or place it in the GOPump™ carrying pouch
